Best Battery for a Toyota Hilux (Petrol/Diesel)

29 November 2025

The Toyota Hilux is South Africa's workhorse. But not all Hilux models are the same, and they don't use the same battery. Fitting the wrong one can lead to failures, especially in modern diesel models.

Group 1: The Petrol & Older Diesel Hilux

If you drive an older Hilux or a modern petrol model (like the 2.7 VVTi), your electrical needs are simple. These bakkies typically use a standard, heavy-duty 652 or 658 battery. The key here is reliable Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) and vibration resistance. A quality Willard or Exide 652 is a perfect, cost-effective choice.

Group 2: The Modern 2.8 GD-6 (Start/Stop)

If you have a modern 2.8 GD-6 or 2.4 GD-6 Hilux (especially high-spec models), you may have a Start/Stop system and a smart alternator.

These bakkies CANNOT use a standard 652 battery. They require, at a minimum, an EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) or, for best performance, an AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery.

  • Why? The constant restarting in traffic and the high electrical load from the vehicle's computers will destroy a standard battery.
  • The Risk: Fitting the wrong battery will lead to premature failure and "Battery System Warning" lights, as the Battery Management System (BMS) cannot charge it correctly.

The Alberton Solution

Don't guess. As Alberton's bakkie specialists, we stock all options. We will test your system and provide the correct warrantied battery for your exact Hilux model, whether it's a standard 652 or a high-tech EFB.

Fast Diagnosis Checklist Before You Replace

Use this practical sequence to avoid replacing the wrong part and wasting money. Area focus: Alberton Central.

  • Confirm battery age and recent cranking behavior before deciding on replacement.
  • Check terminal tightness and corrosion; connection faults can mimic battery failure.
  • Run a charging-system check to rule out alternator undercharge or overcharge.
  • Validate starter draw so repeated no-start issues are not misdiagnosed as battery-only.

A full battery + alternator + starter check gives the safest replacement decision.

Quick answers

Atomic facts Google and AI can quote instantly
